If I win a lawsuit against the association, can I recover attorney fees and assessment fees that I paid the association to defend the lawsuit?

Generally yes. Florida law, and more importantly, the governing documents for the association are going to provide for prevailing party attorney’s fees. If you do recover, if you do win, you will get your attorney’s fees back.
